Strength & Range Training
Strength and range training is so valuable to our athletes and mountain people that in 2018 we built a strength studio! We offer “Prehab”, “Post Rehab” and “Performance-enhancing” strength programming and training groups.
Our coaches have post-graduate training and experience working with all levels including Olympic & XGames athletes. Most of all we offer a great training environment. Refer to our “Coaches Page” for information on our Coaching Team. The following provides a glimpse of what we currently offer.
Studio Memberships
None of our athletes want “gym memberships” – they want to be in the mountains, on their bikes, skis, or competing in running, biking, multisport, or triathlon events. However, specific strength & range exercises will improve performance, prevent injuries, and keep you healthy and active longer! So with that in mind we offer a limited number of memberships, giving reduced prices for those biking or walking to the studio! By limiting membership numbers we ensure a relaxed atmosphere and good access to equipment. If you are interested in training in a relaxed environment surrounded by trees let us know!
Individualized Strength & Range Programs
We create a personal program for you based on your biomechanics, your strengths/weaknesses, injury history & sport/leisure activity, and goals. We will laise with your medical provider to work in, or progress from rehab exercises you may be prescribed. With your individual program you could join our “Small Group Training” to ensure you train correctly and progress exercises as you are able, or you could purchase a monthly membership and do the program independently in our studio. Social Strength
Strength for Multisporters
These groups target run, bike, swim & paddle-specific strength, core strength, hip stability ie gluts!, joint range, proprioception, and general movement patterns. We periodise the work around the NZ endurance/ski season, so effectively you get everything you need to improve your performance and prevent injuries. They are hugely social and a great way to meet other multisporters and mountain people. Many lasting friendships have come through these groups.
Strength Training for Runners & Cyclists
We offer separate Cyclist and Run Strength groups that solely caters to the needs of these sports. These groups are periodised seasonally to cater to the Southern Hemisphere race season.
Strength for Blokes & Strong Women
These groups provide a “mens shed” and “red tent”-style atmosphere for our members. Our members range in age from 25 – 75 and we love the diverse group we work with. All exercises are tailored for mountain people as most of the attendees are living active lives walking our local trails or even ascending Mt Everest! Others participate in Challenge Wanaka, Xterra, Coast to Coast, international marathons, hunt, or work real jobs ranging from accounting to building. The goal of these groups is to keep our community in the mountains, on the building sites and feeling good!
Strength & Conditioning for Runners (AKA Winter Run Combo)
The winter is the best time to make gains in your running and run-specific strength needs! This training session has 45 mins run and 45 mins run-specific strength & range. We break into two groups based on run speed so cater for beginner-intermediate runners. Headlamps mandatory!
Teenage Athletes
This group caters to teenage athletes, working to develop movement patterns, teach fundamental strength exercises, develop good recovery habits (range & foam rolling), as well as providing a performance culture for our community of teenagers wanting to be the best they can be.
Small Group Training
These groups were designed to provide support and motivation while you are following your personal program. We believe this is the most effective way for you to make gains – we oversee your technique and progress your program throughout the 10-week term. We aim for 5:1 trainer: coach ratio to ensure quality feedback. By progressing your program throughout the term you are continually challenged.
Social Group Training
These groups were originally designed for runners, cyclists, triathletes & multisporters to help them improve performance and keep them injury free. Founded by Val Burke in 2004 in Whistler, Canada to support her endurance clients, Val brought them to Wanaka and found that the benefit goes far beyond our original target audience, so we help prepare people of all levels prepare for their sporting and leisure season! The following describes our current strength training groups.
